We are writing to clarify arrangements for severe weather.  School will stay open if at all possible when there is severe weather such as deep/drifting snow, very high winds, widespread flooding.  Parents and carers have the responsibility of getting children/pupils to and from school safely and need to decide if the journey is safe when severe weather affects transport and/or walking conditions.  Parents/carers should inform schools if their child is absent due to severe weather conditions making the journey unsafe.   If your child has a disability and/or learning difficulty your decision to take the journey must take this into consideration.  PLEASE CONSIDER CAREFULLY AND KEEP CHILDREN AT HOME ONLY IF CONDITIONS ARE UNSAFE.

If school is open, only two entrances will operate.  A path from the Wentworth Drive entrance to the Key Stage 1 hall will be cleared and gritted and a path from James Road gates to the James Road entrance will be cleared and gritted

Parents are asked ONLY to enter the school via these two entrances.  The Key Stage 1 hall and the Key Stage 2 entrance hall will be used as changing areas and pram parks.  In these areas children will change boots and be taken to their classes by available staff, older pupils and parents if requested.  We would wish to avoid any excess water being dropped around the school which could present a slipping hazard.

Staff working during these arrangements will be doing their best and operating in stressful conditions, please be as supportive as possible in following these arrangements, which have been planned for the safety and convenience of all.

On occasions, schools will need to close and a message will go out via Parent Pay text message and also on Local Radio if the decision is made before 7.00am.  Local Radio information is given out on:

Radio Kent – West Kent 96.7FM (

Heart Radio – Kent 102.8FM, 103.1FM (

If on the rare occasion school closes at a time within the school day, parents/carers will be informed by telephone/text.  Please ensure that we have your up to date mobile number as this is the number that our Parent Pay contact system uses.  The school website will also have information to keep you informed.   Parents may want to sign up for text message alerts on .

Late opening and/or early closure is a possibility in poor weather conditions and schools will either inform parents the night before or via the Local Radio.

If conditions worsen in the school day and parents feel it is absolutely necessary to collect children, the school should if possible be contacted prior to collection.  Please avoid collecting children before the end of the day unless you feel their safety is at risk.

We have been fortunate in the past and have only had to close in extreme weather and as some staff have to travel some distance to get to school this may be a reason for closure.

Your support and understanding during such periods would be much appreciated.
