Phonics is the study of sounds. It is one of the building blocks of linguistic development which will help to grow and develop your child’s love for reading and creative writing.

There are many benefits of teaching Phonics in early years. Phonics teaches children the qualities of each letter and how to decode letters into sounds. This is a vital skill when seeing unfamiliar words and helps children be more independent with their reading.

Phonics within EYFS

In Foundation Stage we have started learning our first letters and sounds. We have really enjoyed learning the Jolly Phonics songs and actions to help us with our reading and writing. We now feel comfortable forming and spelling some of our first words as well as reading some ‘tricky’ High Frequency words and simple CVC words. Here are some pictures of us enjoying our phonics in and around our classroom environments.
